3/19/2023 0 Comments Our souls at night book reviews![]() ![]() It’s a novel about finding ways to heal and grow together – it’s cozy because, despite how human it is, it is also full of hope. It’s not quite as meditative as Hannah Coulter, but it has the sweetness of people reflecting on their lives in honest ways with the benefit of distance and wisdom of age. ![]() The novel is big on characters and exploring human relationships – not so big on plot events, although we do observe the passage of some time. They express some regret, but because they didn’t hurt each other there is something really precious about the way they are able to be so open together. They take care of Addie’s grandson together, they relive old hurts with one another. Addie and Louis share details of their life, slowly doling out their personal histories as they support one another. The chapters are quite short, this is easily an afternoon read. This is a short novel, quite easy to read – the style of writing reminded me a great deal of Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry (which I loved). They appreciate the company, the companionship. But Addie and Louis are enjoying one another. Of course, people notice Louis leaving in the morning, and that causes tongues to wag – everyone has an opinion about whether or not these two ought to be doing whatever it is they’re doing. ![]() This book is a fantastic overview of what God is not capable off, and how to find comfort in those ‘can’ts’ of God. So, despite living in a small town where people are eager for gossip, they begin sleeping next to one another in Addie’s home. Customer reviews Ann M An excellent read which needs better editing. Addie Moore isn’t looking for sex, necessarily – she just feels lonely at night, and she knows that Louis Waters lost his wife some time ago and he might also feel lonely. Overall, the book is about two old people trying to make the last leg of their lives finding comfort in companionship. It got a while for me to get use to reading like this. The narration is seamless and poetic at times, though I don’t know why the quotations before the speech are completely edited. The characters are well carved and easy to sympathize with. The plot is different from what I usually read and also the age bracket of the protagonists especially being portrayed in this light. This book is nothing like what I have read before. Soon in the small town the rumors spread and Addie and Louis have to deal with the people and even their children. They talk about their lives, their wishes, etc and find solace in each other’s company. Addie and Louis make an arrangement where at night Louis visits Addie’s home. Both in their seventies live alone and crave companionship.ĭays still pass by with chores to do but nights are the toughest. Both of them have lost their spouses and their children are away living their own lives. Addie Moore and Louis Water are neighbors in the small town of Holt, Colorado. It is an unconventional tale of two old people trying to find comfort in each other and facing resistance from the society and their children. His posthumously published sixth novel, Our Souls at Night, takes place in Holt, too, where two lonely 70-year-olds try to find companionship for however long it might last. His daughter lives hours away in Colorado Springs, her son even farther away in Grand Junction, and Addie and Louis have long been living alone in houses now empty of family, the nights so terribly lonely, especially with no one to talk with.įavorite Quote: “Who would have thought at this time in our lives that we’d still have something like this.
